The Ama Yangri Trek is a newly discovered gem nestled in the Helambu region, offering an off-the-beaten-path experience for trekkers. While popular among local trekkers, it remains one of the hidden treasures for those seeking tranquility and breathtaking views near Kathmandu. The trek is often referred to as the "Poon Hill of Kathmandu Valley," as the panoramic views it offers are similar to those from the iconic Poon Hill. Located just 80 km away from Kathmandu, Ama Yangri Trek provides a perfect escape to the mountains.
At an elevation of 3771 meters, Ama Yangri stands as the highest peak in the Kathmandu Valley. It holds great significance for the local communities, as it is regarded as a deity that protects the Helambu area. The mountain offers views that can be compared to the famous Poon Hill in the Annapurna region, making it a must-visit destination for those who love stunning mountain vistas.
The trek passes through traditional Sherpa, Tamang, and Chhetri villages, giving trekkers a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the local culture. The route lies within the Helambu Circuit, one of Nepal’s most celebrated trekking destinations, which is located in the Sindupalchok District, just beneath the Langtang National Park. This region, known as Hyolmo Heritage, is perfect for experiencing pristine landscapes and the rich Hyolmo culture. Along the way, trekkers will be treated to majestic views of the Langtang Range, Annapurna, Manaslu, and even Everest on clear days. The locals' unique language, culture, and customs are different from the Khumbu and Rolwaling regions, offering a distinctive cultural experience. The area is also famous for Thanka art.
The trek starts from Tarke Ghyang, a picturesque village located just below the Ama Yangri peak. Tarke Ghyang is accessible by both motorable roads and trekking routes, with the journey from Timbu to Tarke Ghyang being a popular option. The trek takes around 5 hours and is filled with lush forests, diverse wildlife, and charming villages.
Once you reach Tarke Ghyang, you’ll have the chance to rest and explore the area, with plenty of lodges available for your stay. As you ascend towards the peak, the landscape shifts from dense rhododendron forests to more open Himalayan terrain, offering clear views of the towering peaks. Upon reaching the summit of Ama Yangri, you can enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. After your summit, you can head back to Tarke Ghyang and continue your journey to Timbu, followed by a return trip to Kathmandu.
The Ama Yangri Trek is moderately challenging, with the trail to the summit being steep and at times slippery, especially if it rains. The higher altitudes and vertical paths can make the trek physically demanding, but the stunning views and cultural experiences make the effort worthwhile. Ensure you are well-prepared with enough water, dry fruits, and sturdy shoes with good grip.
Permits: Foreigners need to obtain the Tims Card and Langtang National Park Entrance Permit, costing around NRS 3000. For SAARC nationals, the cost is NRS 1500, and Nepali citizens pay NRS 100 for the entrance fee.
Total Trekking Cost: The total cost for Nepali citizens, including accommodation, is NRS 9000 for groups of 7 or more.
Note: This package is specially designed for Nepali trekkers who wish to explore the mountains in a limited time near Kathmandu. Fixed departures will be available every last Saturday of the month once the COVID-19 restrictions are lifted.
